Scion of the Philidelphia clan. Emmigrated to the US from ...... in 183?. & [249], [278]

Documents from archives in Attendorn mention an Anton Isphording who applied for permission to emigrate (6 Feb 1836), this permission wasn't granted (17 Feb 1836). Later on (31 Mar 1837) Anton is mentioned as having left the country without permission. [269]

Anton must have left Attendorn between Feb 1836 and Mar 1837.

1836: Anton Isphording left without permission. HKO 1949 Folge 4

The notes of Julius Pickert have the following remark: "emigrated to America, Philadelphia".

During that time (1830's) the authorities weren't eager to let people emigrate if they were elligeble for the draft. mentiones that many laws were passend to prevent persons from emigrating to dodge the draft, debts etc.

Arrival in US documented in "Index to Records of Aliens Declarations, Vol 1-11, A to Z, # 9298, p. 10.

Record of Works Projects Administration (WPA) in Philidelphia, PA. Record of Oath of Allegiance 3 Oct 1843.

Was naturalized in Quarter Session Court in 1843. Again in Common Pleas Court 13 Oct. 1845, all in Philadelphia. In the petition Anthony declares that he has resided in the US for at least 5 years prior.

He is also mentioned in Census of 1860, p. 939 (11 W, Philadelphia, PA).

He owned a grocery store at Coates & St. Johns Streets in Philadelphia, 1840-1868. In 1853 he was forced to retire due to contracting a disease which affected his brain. He also developed an intestinal diahrea which further deteriorated his health until he died. During this 13 year period his wife Sarah attempted to raise a family, work the store to provide a living and take care of her husband. (Sarah is mentioned in the Pennsylvania Transcripts # 2794, 26 Nov 1835). Oud 51

Anthony eventually died in 1866 of cholera. In his will (Will Book # 58, p. 373) he left everything to his wife Sarah. However, his sickness had drained their resources and there was little left. Per a disposition from Doctor Thomas Williams he was about 60 at the time of his death. Oud 52

As a result of her financial situation, Sarah applied 12 May 1869 to the War Department for a pension from the death of her son Henry C. in the Civil War. The pension was granted 3 Aug 1869 (in the amount of $8.00 per month) effective the date of Henry's death, 25 Jun 1864.

Anthony and Sarah had at least seven children. One child in mental hospital: Blockley Hospital. The Oldest child (?) was born in 1839, the youngest in 1856. A total of seven, all born in Philadelphia. In 1869 the childrens' ages ranged from 13 to 30.

Anthony, Sarah and Elizabeth appear in the American Genealogical Biological Index, Transcript 26 Nov 1935, # 2794. [249]

Anthony and Sarah also appear in the Philadelphia City Directories from 1840-1868. [282]
