bullet  General Notes:

The 1850 census shows an Anthony Kaifer, age 45 with wife Appolonia and children, Henry (age 8), Peter (age 5), Anthony (age 4), MIchael (age 1) and Joseph (age 21). The parents and Joseph were born in Germany. The children were born in New York. Therefore, Anthony and Appolonia were in the US by 1842. It appears that this family came to the United States prior to any other ancestors of Thomas Reiss.

Search of the 1860 census records shows Anthony "Kaferly" (age 56) and family. His wife is named Appolonia, age 39. His children include Henry (17), Anth. (14), Mich. (12), Appolonia (10), Math (7)., and Barbara (5). Peter is not listed. It is assumed that he died before 1860. Anthony and wife were born in Bavaria. Anthony and Henry are identified as jewelers. It is believed that this is the Koferl family and that the daughter Appolonia became the wife of Louis Thomser. Living next door was a Louis Reitz, age 46. Next door to his family was Louis "Thomson," age 18, enumerated with Joseph and Charles Reitz in Ward 16, Brooklyn, all listed as glassblowers, born in France.

In the 1870 census for the 16th ward, Brooklyn, Anton Keffer, a watchmaker, born in Bavaria, was found in the same building as Louis "Tumpser" (Thomser) and Louis Reitz. Louis Thomser is enumerated with wife "Lisi" (Appolonia Elizabeth), age 19, and son Louis, age 1 month. The two Louis' were glass blowers and born in France. Anton is enumerated with wife "Ablonen, " age 48 but none of their chidren are listed with them. Henry, the oldest son, is enumerated separately with his family. Michael, Matthew and Barbara are unaccounted for. Further search will be done to see if these individuals are enumerated elsewhere.

As seen in the 1850 and 1860 census records, Anton (Anthony) is the father of Henry Koferl, jeweler, (also found in the 1870 census in the 16th ward). Henry's oldest son is named Anton. Anton may also be related to Joseph Ko(e)ferl, a gardener, who was living in the 18th ward of Brooklyn and was also born in Bavaria. Joseph is 15 years younger than Anton. This man is the right age to be the Joseph living with Anthony Kaifer and family in the 1850 census. It is possible that the Charles Koferl, born in Germany in March 1823 who was in New Jersey in 1850 and later in Tusten, Sullivan Co., NY might also be related to Anton (Anthony). Charles was also a watchmaker. There was also a Louis Kofer, born in Bavaria about 1836, enumerated in Queens in 1870, who may be related. In the 1880 census, Anthony and Appolonia do not appear. It is believed that they died before that time.
