Emil SCHMITZ

(1997 Westphalia book says Emil was b. 1874, however, since his parents were married in 1875, I would assume that 1874 is incorrect)

Emil Scbmitz (1874-1966) and Mary Yon Tersch (1885-1967) were married in 1904. Emil was the son of Adam and Mary Ann Zimmerman Scbmitz and Mary was the daughter of Carl and Emma Berens Yon Tersch. They farmed south of Westphalia which later became the Lawrence and Leona Kaufmaim farm. Emil retired in 1931 and moved to Harlan and Mary was the St. Michael's Church organist for 25 years. Their children: Heneritta (Sr. Emeline, SSSF), (1906-1952); Huebert (1909-1989); Sedonia, (b. 9/2/1911), married Raymond Book; Hildagard, (died at eight months of age in 1913); Hildegard (b.1914, graduated from Harlan High School and was at school in Cedar Falls when she died of tuberculosis in 1936. Emil and Mary are buried in the Westphalia Cemetery.

Emil married Maria [Mary] Wilhelmina VON TERSCH, daughter of Carl-Charles [Carolus] Mathias VON TERSCH and Amalia "Emma" Casperina BEHRENS, on 10 May 1904 in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Westphalia, Shelby Co., IA. (Maria [Mary] Wilhelmina VON TERSCH was born on 23 May 1885 in Westphalia, Shelby Co., IA, died on 7 Jan 1967 in Westphalia, Shelby Co., IA and was buried in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia, Shelby, IA, USA.)
